A day after a temple priest was arrested for allegedly assaulting a woman after she spurned his advances, the Gamdevi police booked him for attempt to murder. The victim/complainant Neeru Gadhvi used to work as a sweeper at the temple and had recently quit her job after facing harassment from priest Vinodkumar Dwivedi (45)
Dwivedi knew Neeru was married, but would still try to flirt with her. Fed up of his behaviour,Neeru quit her job six months back and had even notified the Malabar Hill police that he was calling her up and harassing her, said senior police inspector Sanjay Diwadkar from Gamdevi police station.
Thereafter, she made a living by selling eatables near railway stations. However,Dwivedi continued to pester her. Around 12:30 pm on Wednesday,Neeru along with her sister-in-law Rekha Gadhvi got off a bus on the Grant Road flyover and were accosted by Dwivedi. He was carrying a broken bottle with which he hit Neeru several times.
In an attempt to save Neeru,Rekha also sustain injuries. Dwivedi then realised the impact of his attack and tried to stab himself with the same bottle. However, the passers by rushed all three of them to the Nair hospital, said Diwadkar.
Both Neeru and Rekha are said to be out of danger. Dwivedi is currently undergoing treatment in the hospital, and will be arrested as soon as he is discharged.
