Five months after Marol’s Church road underwent extensive repairs ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit on February 10, potholes have resurfaced on the stretch extending from Airport Road metro station to Bohra Colony.

Situated in city’s K/E ward, which comprises Andheri, Jogeshwari and Vile Parle, the Church road along with its footpath and street lamps were renovated in the weeks leading up to PM’s visit to Marol to inaugurate the Mumbai campus of Aljamea-tus-Saifiyah Arabic Academy. However, with heavy rain battering the city since the onset of monsoon, the route has seen the emergence of potholes, much to the inconvenience of the commuters.

Godfrey Pimenta of Watchdog Foundation told The Indian Express, “The entire stretch starting from T2 terminal up to the Bohra Colony was repaired at a huge cost. New lampposts, transformers, ornamental planters and graffiti on walls were also put up on the stretch… Four months later, potholes have appeared again.”

Responding to questions from The Indian Express, civic body officials from the K/E ward said that repair works along the route will be undertaken by the central agency. “This is a project road and the civic body’s roads department will carry out necessary repair works,”said an official.

On July 24, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that between April 1 and July 24, 2023, a total of 6,045 potholes were filled by the roads department.

“So far, 512 metric tonnes of dry cold mix was supplied to all the 24 municipal wards of Mumbai for filling the potholes. Besides this, a fund of Rs 2 crore has also been allotted to each municipal ward to mitigate pothole issues. The deadline for filling a pothole is 48 hours and we are trying to achieve this by implementing adequate manpower and machinery,” said the officials.
