The standing committee of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday passed the proposal to increase sewerage charges in the city. While Municipal Commissioner Sitaram Kunte proposed a 20 per cent hike in sewerage charges, the BJP added an amendment to the proposal reducing it by 10 per cent. BJP group leader Manoj Kotak said, “BMC’s coffers are not empty that we need to keep imposing these taxes and burden people.”

Kunte, in his budget speech for fiscal 2015-16, proposed to increase the sewerage charges (a component of water charges) from the present 60 per cent to 80 per cent. As per the decision taken on Friday, the charges will now be 70 per cent of the water bill.
Sanjay Mukherjee, additional municipal commissioner, also in-charge of the water department said, “We are increasing the charges to augment our services. The hike is expected to earn the BMC Rs 130 crore.”
