The curfew imposed in violence-hit areas of Nagpur since late night on March 17 was completely lifted on Sunday, allowing residents to resume normal activities. The affected police station areas—Kotwali, Tehsil and Ganeshpeth (Zone 3), along with Yashodhara Nagar (Zone 5)—are no longer under restrictions.
Earlier on Saturday, the curfew was gradually eased, starting with a full lifting in Pachpaoli, Shanti Nagar, Lakadganj (Zone 3), Sakkardara and Imamwada (Zone 4) from 7 pm.
The decision comes after an assessment of the situation by authorities. Addressing the media, Commissioner of Police Dr Ravinder Singal said, “A decision to lift the curfew has been taken after assessing the current situation. The situation is normal, and all officials are on the ground. We appeal to citizens to maintain peace and law & order.”
He also urged people to refrain from spreading rumours and to exercise caution while posting anything related to riots on social media.
Providing an update on the riots, Dr Singal said that over 110 people have been identified, and fresh arrests are being made. In total, 13 FIRs have been registered, including four by the Nagpur Police cyber cell, in which the main accused Fahim Khan has been charged under Section 152 of BNS for sedition.
Speaking about one of the riot victims, 38-year-old Irfan Ansari, the police commissioner assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted.
Dr Singal also addressed recent arrests linked to the Minority Democratic Party (MDP). Two fresh arrests have been made following the detention of main accused Fahim Khan, that is Hamid Engineer, and Mohammad Shahzad. He stated that social media posts from the party’s official profile and its members were being analysed, and their impact was under review. “Action will be taken if substantial evidence is found,” he added.
Emphasising that there would be no compromise on security, Dr Singal assured that authorities remain on high alert to prevent any further disturbances. Residents have been urged to cooperate with law enforcement to ensure lasting peace in the city.
Earlier on Saturday, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the cost of damages caused during the arson and vandalism would be “recovered from the rioters themselves” and “bulldozer action” would be taken if required.
