Mira Bhayandar Vasai Virar (MBVV) Police arrested a murder convict in Punjab who had been on the run ever since he was released on parole during a Covid remission three years ago.
During Covid, remission was given to inmates as jails were overcrowded and the convict had been released on parole in 2022. He was to return to the prison on May 7, 2022.
However, the accused did not turn up before the police, following which an FIR had been registered against him and the police team started looking for him.
The accused, identified as Shankar Jagdish Mukhiya alias Samosewala, kept changing his appearance in order to evade detection, till he was eventually in from Punjab.
The accused Mukhiya had been convicted for the murder of a person named Dilip Basnet on September 15, 2016 in Nalasopara area. After Basnet made obscene remarks against the Mukhiya’s wife, he had stabbed him with a sharp weapon, an officer said. Following this, Waliv police had registered a case under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and a court subsequently found Mukhiya guilty. He has since been in Thane Central jail serving his term.
“Recently, using technical intelligence we found that he had changed his name and was residing in Punjab. Following this, a team was sent there and he was detained from the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district in Punjab,” an officer said. The accused was then brought to the city and formally placed under arrest.
