The merit list of special round for First Year Junior College (FYJC=Class XI) admissions was declared on Monday. Many students managed to bag seats in popular city colleges as there was increased pool of seats for general merit after quota seats were surrendered by colleges, post third round of the centralised admission process last week.

As the number of available seats increased, the cut-off scores witnessed a marginal dip, especially in most sought-after colleges in the city. For example, in H R College, which is preferred by many for commerce stream, the cut-off score dropped to 94 per cent from 98.2 per cent in the third merit list, which was a considerable increase from 93 per cent cut-off score recorded in second merit list. In Ramnivas Ruia Junior College too, the cut-off score for Arts stream in special merit list dropped to 71 per cent which was consistently around 92 per cent in earlier lists.

An official from the DyDE office said, “This is a regular trend. After seeing a drop in the cut-off score in the second merit list, popular city colleges close admissions at higher cut-offs in the third merit list. This is because most of them fill their seats available for centralised admission, by the end of second round. But after the third round of admission, such colleges surrender vacant seats from minority, in-house and management quota to centralised rounds. With increase in the number of available seats, the cut-off witnesses a marginal drop to fill those seats.”

However, this is not true for all colleges as some of them continue to close at higher cut-offs indicating lesser seats. St. Xavier’s college and R A Podar College, continue to close at higher cut-off than the third merit list. “But having a cut-off score for special round means these colleges too had seats to offer in the special round,” added the official.

Out of 93,202 students who applied for seats under the first special round, 80,039 were allotted seats on Monday. Lowered cut-off scores indicate some popular city colleges had seats to offer in this round, after closing at much higher cut-offs in the third round.

Total 53,530 students were allotted seats in their first preferred college, making it mandatory for them to confirm the admissions.

While 10,895 students were allotted seats in their second preferred college, 5,616 got college of their third preference. Allotments continue to remain highest in Commerce stream with 42,447 candidates. This is followed by Science stream with 30,189 students and Arts stream with 6,685 students. For this special round, there were a total of 1,77,912 seats. Total of 93,202 students participated in this round and out of those 80,039 were allotted seats, leaving 97,873 seats vacant.
