After an extended period of wet spells, Mumbai is in for a dry week ahead with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stating that only moderate showers will continue in the city for the next five days at least. No warnings have been issued by the weather bureau for the Konkan region including Mumbai till at least Friday.
Throughout the previous week, the city experienced intermittent spells of light to medium showers along with overcast skies.
Meteorologists attributed the continuous showers to a low pressure area forming over Bay of Bengal accompanied by an active cyclonic circulation over which a trough had extended from Rajasthan to Jharkhand. In light of the active systems, the IMD had placed Mumbai and neighbouring districts under a yellow alert until Sunday morning.
However, Mumbai woke up to clear skies on Monday morning as rainfall eluded the region.
Data from the IMD shows that between Sunday and Monday morning, the suburban Santacruz station received 11 mm rain while the Colaba coastal observatory received 0.6 mm rainfall. The city sought respite from rains throughout the day with records showing that no rain was recorded in the suburbs between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on Monday.
According to weather observers, in light of the active systems weakening, heavy downpour will continue to evade the region for the next five days ending on Friday.
So far, the city’s Santacruz station has received 2612 mm rain since June, which is a surplus of over 534 mm rainfall from the normals. Meanwhile, the Colaba station is reeling under a marginal deficit, having received 1700 mm rain between June and September 8.
Despite the forecast of a lull, Mumbai – along with the rest of India – is slated to receive above normal rainfall this September, according to the IMD’s long range forecast. Typically, September is the driest of the four monsoon months in Mumbai when the city’s suburban station receives an average of 359 mm rain in the month of September while the coastal observatory records 336 mm rain. As of Monday, the Santacruz station has already received 118 mm in the month.
