Potholes made a comeback on the roads of the city as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday said that more than 6,000 potholes were filled by the civic body in the past one month.

In a statement, the civic body said that between April 1 and July 24, 2023, a total 6,045 potholes were filled by the civic body’s roads department. It is pertinent to note that from this year onwards, the BMC has also taken over the responsibility of maintaining the Western and Eastern Express highways, which become filled with potholes during monsoon.

Civic officials said that designated teams have been deployed which are filling potholes that are emerging specifically in these two arterial roads. The BMC uses the conventional method of pothole filling by using cold mix. From this year, the civic body had also announced usage of an innovative measure of pothole filling by using hardened concrete.

However, the civic officials on Monday said that most of the potholes have been filled by using cold mix techniques.”So far, 512 metric tonnes of dry cold mix have been supplied to all the 24 municipal wards of Mumbai for filling the potholes. Besides this, a fund of Rs 2 crore has also been allotted to each municipal wards to mitigate pothole issues,” said civic officials.

“While the deadline for filling a pothole is of 48 hours, yet we are trying to achieve this within 24 hours by implementing adequate manpower and machinery,” said an official.

Mumbai at present has a road network of 2,050 km, out of which nearly 1,000 km is being concretised and this year, the BMC had issued work order for concretising 400 km of roads, prior to which another work order for concretising 270 km of roads was issued. Civic officials said that concretising of roads is being taken up to solve the issue of potholes permanently.
