A resident of Mumbai’s Malwani area surrendered before the police in the early hours of Sunday claiming that he had killed his sister’s boyfriend after learning that the 40-year-old man had also had an affair with his mother but refused to marry her. The police arrested the man, who is a choreographer, on murder charges.

According to the police, the deceased, Nitin Premji Solanki, a resident of Jogeshwari, was working in a prominent hospital in Andheri (west) as a ward boy. He allegedly had had an affair with the 24-year-old sister of the accused for the past three years, and the accused was aware of it.

During their investigation, the police learnt that Solanki had broken off the relationship with the woman two months before but was again trying to contact her in the past few days, claiming that he wanted to marry her.

When the accused came to know this, he had an argument with Solanki, whom he warned to stay away from his sister, said a police officer. The accused was also aware that Solanki had had an affair with his mother before starting the relationship with his sister.

“For this reason, the accused was very upset with the behaviour of the deceased, who initially played with his mother’s emotions and then with his sister’s. Solanki used to make inappropriate comments about the mother’s and sister’s character, also,” said Shailendra Nagarkar, Senior Inspector, Malwani police station.

According to the police, the accused met Solanki at his home in Jogeshwari, and they drank alcohol till late at night on Saturday. The accused then took Solanki to a room near Krishna Ashram in the Koliwada area, Marve Road, Malwani in Malad (west), where he had kept a bamboo pole. The accused hit Solanki on his head several times till he realised that he had died, said Nagarkar.

After he surrendered at the Malwani police station, the police rushed on the spot and took Solanki to the Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali, where doctors declared him dead, added Nagarkar.

Solanki’s constant loose talk about the family of the accused had led them to have an argument earlier also, according to the police. The accused has been remanded in police custody till September 18.
