Lyricist-writer Javed Akhtar has been summoned by a magistrate court in Mumbai in connection with a complaint filed by actor Kangana Ranaut. The court has directed Akhtar to be present before it on August 5.

Ranaut had filed a counter-complaint against Akhtar after he approached the police against her for allegedly defaming him in an interview given to a television channel in 2020. Ranaut had claimed that the writer had threatened and criminally intimidated her when she had a “personal dispute” with an actor.

In the case filed against Kangana Ranaut, witnesses are currently being examined. In his complaint, Akhtar claimed that Ranaut dragged his name during an interview while referring to a ‘coterie’ existing in Bollywood, following the alleged suicide committed by actor Sushant Singh Rajput. The court had in 2021 found prima facie sufficient evidence to proceed with the trial.

The actor, in her complaint against Akhtar, said that following her dispute with her co-star, the lyricist had called her and her sister Rangoli to his house with “mala fide intentions and ulterior motives and then criminally intimidated and threatened” her. As per Ranaut’s complaint, Akhtar had forced her to tender a written apology to her co-star.
