The trial runs of Mumbai Metro Line 4 began on Monday on a 4.4-km stretch covering four stations from Gaimukh to Vijay Garden in Thane, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde flagging off the first train.
The first phase of the stretch is a part of the 32.3-km Line 4 and its 2.8-km extension Line 4A, together spanning 35 km with 32 stations that will connect Wadala in Central Mumbai to Gaimukh in the eastern suburb of Thane providing a crucial link for commuters traveling between Thane, Mumbai’s eastern suburbs, and the city’s commercial hubs.
It is further expected top be connected to the proposed Metro line 11 that connects Wadala CSMT turning it into a 58 km long metro line.
“Once fully operational and connected to Line 11 (Wadala–CSMT), the corridor will stretch 58 km, becoming India’s longest elevated metro line, expected to carry over 21 lakh passengers daily,” Fadnavis said adding that it will cut down commuting time between South Mumbai to Thane by half.
“Maximum work will be completed by next year end. The Rs 16,000-crore project will run eight-coach trains, with a 45-hectare depot under construction at Mogharpada to serve Metro Lines 4, 4A, 10, and 11. Temporary arrangements near Gaimukh have been made for trial operations.”Fadnavis added.
Deputy CM Shinde, who is also MMRDA chairman, called the trial runs “historic for Thane,” recalling that the city had been largely ignored in previous metro plans. “After 172 years since the railway was inaugurated here, Thane is finally getting a modern metro system. The 58-km elevated corridor is the first of its kind in India and will play a key role in reducing traffic congestion,” he said. “With all metro phases operational by the end of next year, residents will have seamless connectivity to Mumbai, the eastern and western suburbs, and other planned metro corridors.”
Fadnavis claimed that the project had been stalled under the MVA government.
“Had the work not been stalled for two and a half years by the previous government, the entire stretch would have been open by now. We have expedited work, and all segments will be ready by 2027,” Fadnavis said.
Trial runs are being conducted even as the Mogharpada depot for Metro Lines 4 and 4A is under construction, with temporary inspection pits beyond Gaimukh station facilitating testing.
On August 25, the first six-coach trial train was lowered on the tracks near Anand Nagar in Thane. The rolling stock, contracted to the Larsen & Toubro-Alstom joint venture, matches the final train dimensions.
Once fully integrated with Metro Line 11, the corridor will form a continuous 58-km elevated network, connecting Thane, the eastern suburbs, and Mumbai city. The corridor is expected to serve over 21 lakh passengers daily, becoming the longest elevated metro line in India, easing road congestion, and transforming public transport in the region.
