In the last few days, Mumbai witnessed heavy showers in several pockets, leaving parts of the city inundated with rainwater. While public transports like BEST buses and railways services remained affected to some extent, it was the few months old elevated Metro Lines 2A and 7 that came to the aid of the people.
The trains on these lines connecting, which cater to the eastern and western suburbs of Mumbai, were running on time, making them the most preferred option for Mumbaikers.
The Metro officials claimed that on July 26, all the 253 scheduled trains were run to ferry 2.22 lakh passengers. The ridership saw an increase by 3,600 on this day.
On July 25, 2,18,635 passengers availed the metro services while on July 24, the ridership was 2,12,490.
The Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL) in a media statement credited the jump in ridership to the ongoing monsoon.
The Mumbai Metro continues to serve as a reliable and convenient mode of transport for Mumbaikars, even in adverse weather conditions, the officials said. The increase in daily ridership is a testament to the trust and confidence that the people of Mumbai have placed in the Metro system, a statement reads.
Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA & CMD, MMMOCL on the increase in ridership said, “We are delighted to see Mumbaikars choosing the sustainable and environmentally friendly option of the Mumbai Metro amid heavy rainfall. We understand the challenges faced by the people during this time and are committed to providing them with a hassle-free and sustainable mode of travel.”
Before monsoon, the MMMOCL had launched a ‘monsoon control room’ at its Charkop depot and installed anemometers at five stations on Lines 2A and 7 to measure winds speeds. These devices accurately measure wind speed and determine whether it is safe to continue Metro services during challenging weather conditions.
Lines 2A and 7 comprise a total of 30 stations. The 18.6 km Line 2A runs from Dahisar East to D N Nagar in Andheri West and the travel time is 40 minutes. Similarly, the Line 7 from Andheri to Dahisar has a 16.5 km fully elevated stretch and the travel time is 35 minutes, running along the Western Express Highway, covering 13 stations.
The services on Metro Lines 2A and 7 are available between 6 am to 10.30 pm with a frequency of one train in eight minutes during peak hours and one in 10 minutes during non-peak hours.
