A 54-year-old man from Vikhroli in Mumbai has lost Rs 1 lakh while responding to an email that promised to improve his credit score online, police said on Wednesday, adding that they were trying to track down the fraudsters.
Devendra Thota said he received an email from “Credit Mantri” a few days ago saying that his CIBIL score was low and that it could improve his score. The email said that he would have to pay a fee and it contained a link to pay the fee. As required in the link, Thota provided details of his ICICI and IDBI Bank accounts along with some documents.
On November 30, Thota received a message from ICICI Bank on his mobile phone informing him that Rs 50,000 had been transferred from his account. Some time later he received a message that Rs 50,000 had been transferred from his IDBI Bank account.
Thota called up both the banks to inform them that he had not made any of these transactions. As he remembered that he had sent the account details to the email, he realised that he had been cheated.
He then approached the Vikhroli police, who registered an FIR against unidentified persons on Tuesday on the basis of his complaint.
An officer said that fraudsters send bulk emails promising to improve CIBIL score and that people should not fall prey to the scam. If you lose money, you should immediately call up the cyber crime helpline 1930 to stop the payment.
