A 34-year-old south Mumbai-based man has been arrested by the Customs from Terminal 2 of Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport while allegedly smuggling gold from abroad by concealing it in his undergarments.

Ahmed Khan, a resident of Kambekar Street in south Mumbai, was nabbed on Friday night. Khan had crossed the Green Channel and was moving towards the exit of the airport. He was stopped and was found carrying four pouches in his underwear.

On cutting open the pouches, 3.7 kg of gold worth Rs 1.88 crore in wax form were found, said an official.

He was arrested under relevant sections of Customs Act.

His interrogation revealed he is a driver by profession and was acting as a carrier for gold smuggling against a hefty commission promised to him on successful delivery of the gold to someone in Mumbai, another source said.

Khan was produced before a holiday court on Saturday and was remanded to judicial custody till October 27.
