A 55-year-old railway passenger has died four days after he was attacked by two perpetrators using a knife and a belt onboard a local train between Khadavli and Vasind railway stations. Probe revealed that the accused person fatally attacked the passenger over a misunderstanding that the victim and his friends were making fun of him. The police have arrested both the accused. A friend of the deceased person has also sustained minor injuries in the attack.
The deceased has been identified as Dattatray Bhoir, a farmer from Sajivali village in Shahapur taluka.
In the early hours of April 28, Bhoir along with his friend Pradeep Shirose and two others were returning home after attending a friend’s Haldi programme in Ulhasnagar.
They reached Shahad station and boarded a Kasara bound local train at 2 am. Bhoir, and his three friends were sitting in the middle general compartment of the train and were loudly talking and cracking jokes, as they all were a little drunk, the police said.
“Since we all four friends were making fun of each other and enjoying ourselves loudly, one of the four persons standing near the door got irritated and angry. He came to us, took out a knife and opened an attack on us. Bhoir tried to resist him. The attacker then attacked Bhoir on his stomach and hand. When I tried to stop him, he injured my stomach too. Later, the attacker’s associate also attacked us using his belt,” Shirose stated in his statement to the police.
At 2.30 when the train reached Vasind station the two attackers got down and tried to escape. But, Shirose screamed for help, following which the policemen on the station caught the two, who were later identified as Amol Pardeshi, 40 and Tanji Kumar Jammuwal, 21.
“Injured Bhoir was first taken to a primary health centre in Vasind. Later he was shifted to Crystal hospital in Asangaon and then to another hospital in Thane owing to his critical condition. He died during treatment on Thursday,” said Kalyan GRP senior inspector Pandharinath Kande.
“Our probe revealed that the accused four persons had a misunderstanding that the Bhoir’s group was making fun of them and laughing at them. The two arrested accused and their two friends, who are wanted in the case, were under the influence of marijuana. They have all been booked under sections 302, 324, 337 and 34 of Indian Penal Code. One of them has an assault case on him, Kande added.
