The integrated village development plan at Vanvasi village in Maharashtra’s Jawahar taluka has been completed by the Rotary Club of Bombay (RCB)in collaboration with Chirag Rural Development Foundation.
“The village of Vanvasi, perched atop towering hills has been provided with a submersible solar pump in a village well, powered by a solar system to provide drinking water to the 120 homes. Another submersible solar pump in a nearby dam is powered by a 10KW solar system which pulls water across 1000 metres of HDPE pipeline to provide water to over 20 acres of farmland,” said Pratibha Pai, Founder, Chirag Rural Development Foundation.
The 120 homes of Vanvasi village will receive solar lamps for backup lighting which would be of immense help in the monsoons when there are frequent power outages, she said.
Each household will also receive individual water filters to ensure safe drinking water.
The project provides an energy-conscious lighting solution for the village by installing 15 solar-powered street lights. These lights have been strategically placed in the village to ensure security.
“The village anganwadi has got a 350 W off-grid solar system and the Primary Health Centre has been given a separate 2KW solar system to ensure continuous medical facilities,” Pratibha Pai said.
About the rural development projects undertaken by RCB, the organisation’s president Vineet Bhatnagar said, “We have consistently looked at an integrated approach in our projects. I am delighted that we have transformed the lives of about 10,830 villagers in 37 villages and hamlets. About 35,558 litres of safe drinking water has been provided, 280 acres of agricultural land has been brought under cultivation, 176 KW of solar power has been generated and 24 educational facilities have been supported with sustainable energy.”
Bhatnagar also thanked Geeta Keshavan, the sole donor for the Vanvasi Village project.
Mihir Mody, Chairman of the IVD Committee said, “We are very satisfied that this ongoing program has provided many facilities in the villages, such as rice mills and rice hullers. In Savade village an entire community hall was rebuilt in Gadade village, and sewing machines were provided to train women and empower them. Computers were provided in upper primary schools in Pingeman village. This well-planned intervention has truly helped the beneficiaries.”
