Maharashtra will introduce a scheme to complement the Centre’s “Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana” under which rooftop solar panels are provided to households consuming 0 to 300 units of electricity.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis made the announcement Tuesday in the state Assembly during the Question Hour.

“The central government has introduced the ‘Pradhan Mantri Suryaghar Free Electricity Scheme’ for households consuming 0 to 300 units of electricity. The state government will introduce a separate scheme to support this scheme of the central government,” Fadnavis said.
Sena MLA Murji Patel had raised a question regarding the increase in electricity tariffs.

While responding to the question, the chief minister said that the government is trying to reduce electricity tariffs in the state and has submitted a multi-year tariff petition for the next five years to the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission.

“Due to this, electricity tariffs will be reduced every year in the next five years in the state. Maharashtra is the first state in the country to submit a petition to the Electricity Regulatory Commission to reduce electricity tariffs every year for the next five years.

For Mumbai city as well, a multi-year electricity tariff petition has been submitted to the Electricity Regulatory Commission through electricity distribution companies BEST, Tata Power, Adani and Mahavitaran,” Fadnavis said.

The regulatory commission has the authority to approve electricity tariffs.

“The government has determined the tariffs for the next five years and submitted them to the commission for approval. Accordingly, all regulatory procedures will be followed and electricity tariff orders will be issued for the period 2025-26 to 2029-30 on that basis. Electricity tariff will be levied by electricity distribution companies accordingly,” he said.

Fadnavis also announced that remote villages in Nandurbar district will be supplied electricity through the conventional way.

“A proposal has been submitted to supply electricity in the remote areas of Nandurbar district through traditional methods. Funds will also be available from the Central Government’s Pradhan Mantri Jan Mana Yojana for this. Considering the geographical conditions of the remote areas of Nandurbar district, electricity will be supplied to all the villages through traditional methods in the next one-and-a-half to two years,” Fadnavis said.
