The Maharashtra government on Monday launched 21 fully equipped mobile forensic vans for better detection of crime and gathering evidence, becoming the first state in the country to do so.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis launched the mobile forensic van at Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai.
Fadnavis, who also holds Home portfolio, said that under Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), the use of forensic evidence has been made mandatory for offenses punishable by imprisonment of seven years or more.
As part of this reform, the state government has proposed to introduce 259 mobile forensic vans out of which 21 are fully equipped and have been made launched.
“Using the block chain technology, the crime scene application will ensure that evidence is stored and secured through barcodes,” Fadnavis said.
“Now, no accused can evade punishment by destroying or tampering with the evidence. This initiative will instill fear among the criminals and the rate of crime conviction will also definitely increase,” he added.
Among those present for the launch of mobile forensic vans were MoS Home (Rural), Housing, School Education, Co-operation and Mining Dr. Pankaj Bhoyer and senior officials from the state forensic science laboratory.
