The Maharashtra government Thursday set a definite target of bringing 6.61 lakh hectares of agricultural land cultivating sugarcane under drip irrigation.
At a meeting held in Mumbai, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the drought mitigation measures will be of no help if stern action is not taken to stop the unaudited lifting of water for sugarcane cultivation.
“The state government cannot compromise and let water-intensive crops like sugarcane to use unlimited amount of water in the drought-stricken districts of Marathwada. Sugarcane cultivation across Maharashtra should be brought under drip irrigation by 2019,” Fadnavis said.

The chief minister had convened a meeting on issues related to ministry of agriculture on Thursday. Agriculture Minister Eknath Khadse, Minister for Cooperation Chandrakant Patil and Minister of State Ram Shinde were present at the meeting.
Fadnavis added, “The Israel model of ‘more crop per drop’ has become a necessity. We need to implement this model right away.”
