As many as 4,140 candidates are in fray for the Maharashtra Assembly elections, while 2,938 candidates withdrew their papers by Monday, the last date for withdrawing nominations.
Out of the 288 Assembly seats, Majalgaon seat in Beed district has the highest number of 34 candidates in the fray. Mahad in Raigad district and Kudal in Sindhudurg district have the lowest number of candidates, five each.
In the 2019 Assembly polls, the total number of candidates in the fray was 3,237 while in 2014, 4,119 candidates contested the Assembly polls. In Nanded’s Bhokar seat, 25 candidates were left in the fray after the deadline for withdrawal of nominations as 115 out of 140 have opted out.
Former chief minister Ashok Chavan’s daughter Shreejaya Chavan is making her electoral debut as a BJP candidate his traditional Bhokar Assembly seat. Shreejaya will face Congress candidate Tirupati Kadam-Kondhekar in the seat.
In the 36 constituencies in Mumbai and suburbs, 420 candidates will contest the election. While 315 candidates are in the fray from 26 seats in Mumbai suburbs, for 10 ten constituencies in Mumbai city, there are 105 candidates.
