Maharashtra announced Rs 15,000 crore as compensation for agri sector in 3 yrs

Amid demands of farm loan waiver due to incessant rains in Maharashtra, the data from the Relief and Rehabilitation department shows that the state has sanctioned upto Rs 15,000 crore in last three years for farm sector in the form of financial compensation.

The data shows that the state faced at least 11 incidents of untimely rains, heavy rainfall, cyclone, drought, floods, continuous rains in the last three years which led to damage of agriculture.

As per the data, the government announced Rs 551.30 crore due to untimely rains between March and May 2023; Rs 6,924.93 crore for heavy rainfall and floods; the drought in the following season led to the announcement of Rs 2,443.22 crore; untimely rains, incidents of heavy rainfall and flooding in 2024 led to Rs 3,826.77 crore of financial aid being announced.

In 2025, so far, the government has announced Rs 2,215 crore as financial compensation for the farmers for the heavy rainfall in July and August. Following the rainfall in September, the demands of farm loan waiver have been raised.

Former leader of opposition and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve on Friday said that the government should declare how much of this money has actually been deposited in the accounts of farmers. “The government has been announcing packages for years. But how much of it has been deposited in the accounts of farmers? A minister in the cabinet should declare it,” he said.

Sources within the Relief and Rehabilitation department said that the government has deposited 90 per cent of the money declared till now in the accounts of farmers.

“The money goes directly into the accounts of the farmers. Except for the recently, announced Rs 2215 crore, everything else has been deposited with the beneficiaries,” an official said. He said that the decision of farm loan waiver is a policy decision.

Maharashtra government on Thursday wrote to center seeking more funds from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) mentioning that crops on over 50 lakh hectare have been damaged due to the rains.

86 lost lives

As many as 86 people lost lives in rain-related incidents in Marathwada between June 1 and September 25. The highest number of 26 deaths was recorded in Nanded 26, followed by Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar with 15, Hingoli and Beed 11 each, Jalna seven, Latur and Parbhani six each and Dharashiv four.
