Two persons were injured in a freak accident on a ride at the Adlabs Imagica amusement park in Khopoli on Wednesday afternoon. The Khalapur police in Khopoli have started investigations into the incident.
According to police sources, the incident occurred around 1 pm. The ‘Bandits of Robin Hood’ attraction, a roller coaster ride with the legend of Robin Hood as its theme, was operational when one of its wheels broke.
“The breaking of the wheel caused the ride to stop and tilt over to one side. As a result, some of the people aboard it bumped into its chassis. It was vacated and the injured were taken to the government hospital in Khopoli,” said Police Inspector I S Patil of Khalapur police station. Of the four people taken to the hospital, two were discharged after first aid. The other two, Purnima Rathi (35) and her daughter Mamta (16), underwent several tests, including a CT scan to check for internal injuries, and were later discharged. The police said the two were not found to have suffered any major injury.
The police are now conducting inquiries to check who was responsible for maintenance of the ride. “The person concerned will be booked for causing injury and endangering life due to negligence,” Patil added. In a statement to the media, Adlabs Imagica said the ride was currently closed for safety inspection. Ashutosh Kale, assistant vice-president, Adlabs Imagica Safety and Security, said: “In accordance with our daily safety procedures, every ride is checked for safety and technical issues before being run for our guests through a nightlong maintenance schedule. Three test runs were carried out on the ride before opening it for guests. We have never faced a situation like this before and we are coordinating with the ride manufacturer to ensure that no future untoward incident occurs.”
