The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT),Bombay,is known as an island of excellence and students have time and again proved to be winners in the field of engineering sciences. And these stalwarts have always come together to give back to their alma mater in a unique way.

The class of ’85 has decided to raise Rs 4.5 crore towards their ‘legacy project’. They have already committed Rs 2 crore and will be presenting it to the institute during their Silver Jubilee Reunion from December 24 to December 26.

The legacy project of ’85 batch aims to promote Technology and Sustainable Development (T&SD) through academics and entrepreneurship at IIT Bombay. The project would establish Batch of ’85 Chair Professorship in T&SD,Organise ‘IIT-B (T&SD)’ Business Plan Competition,Contribute to the existing Young Faculty Awards ‘sign-on bonus’ program and promote the Green campus initiative by installing solar water heaters in hostels.

“Making promotion of T&SD as our legacy project sends a strong message that we consider this issue to be very important, and this will serve as a catalyst for directing resources from IIT-B administration and other funding agencies towards T&SD in the future,” said Amol Mahajani co-ordinator of the ’85 batch.

The fund-raising drive for the project is well under way and the cheques and share transfers have begun to roll in.

Milind Gokhale CEO and Director of IITB Alumni Association said,“As is the tradition at IIT-B,alumni batches on the silver jubilee of their graduation present the institution with a legacy gift that would benefit the institution for the years to come.”
