A SPECIAL court on Friday sentenced a 45-year-old man to life imprisonment for the remainder of his life for kidnapping and sexually assaulting a seven-year-old girl in 2022.
The court took into account that the accused was a ‘habitual offender’ and has five other other cases pending against him for similar offences of child sexual abuse.
According to the prosecution, on April 26, 2022, the victim’s mother got a call from an unknown number and she was asked to rush to a location near a school in the western suburbs.
The caller said that her daughter was found abandoned. On reaching there, the victim’s mother found her daughter.
The police had also reached the spot. Their probe revealed that the girl, then a Class 1 student, had gone to buy snacks at a samosa stall when an unknown man approached her. He began speaking to her and told her that she needs to bring some red soil and asked her to follow him.
According to police, the accused took her to an isolated spot and sexually assaulted her. He also threatened her not to tell anyone about the incident before leaving. After he left, the girl came out on the main road and found two women near a school. She asked them to call her mother.
During the trial, the woman who had called the victim’s mother also deposed. The police, based on CCTV footage and description of the accused, arrested the man.
The court considered evidence, including medical reports, testimonies, including that of a witness who had seen the accused with the girl before the incident, before sentencing the man to life imprisonment.
