As part of its probe into the murder of senior investigative journalist J Dey,the Mumbai Police Crime Branch identified members of a group Dey was travelling with while on a “mysterious tour” to Europe shortly before his death.

According to the police, between May 28 and June 5,Dey had toured Scotland,London and Germany. However, the exact purpose of the trip is yet to be ascertained. “It struck us as a bit strange that Dey would go alone on a leisure trip to Scotland,London and Germany. In order to verify the details of his visit and what he did at these locations,we have identified the tour agency that made the bookings. Through the agency,we have also now identified members of the group Dey was travelling with. We are attempting to get a clear picture of the nature of Dey’s tour from them,” said a Crime Branch officer, who did not wish to be named.

Meanwhile, despite speculation that a businessman was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the murder, the police strongly denied the reports. Rumours were rife that Nihal Pravinchandra Tanna (34) had met Dey a few days before his murder and had been picked up as a suspect in the case.

It later turned out that the Vakola police arrested Tanna on the charge of posing as a policeman during a nakabandi at the Hans Burga Road near the Kalina Forensic Science Laboratory on Tuesday afternoon. The cops also seized a weapon from his possession.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 10) Satyanarayan Chowdhary said at 12.30 pm,Tanna — a resident of Parikshak Nagar in Kalva — was intercepted by a team from the Vakola police station. Tanna was travelling in a white Maruti Swift with a board with ‘police’ written on it.

When the police officers searched the car, they found a .32 mark-4 revolver, five bullets and a dummy bullet. Tanna was booked for possession of an illegal weapon and posing as a police officer. “We have found some documents in the car which we are scrutinising before we can reveal anything,” said an officer on condition of anonymity.

Asked whether Tanna was an informer and had met Dey two days before his murder,Chowdhary said,“Tanna has just been arrested under the Arms Act and for cheating. We are investigating the case further. However,Tanna is not connected to the Dey murder case.”
