Congress Mumbai office vandalised after protest march by BJYM, 40 booked: police

Police registered a case against around 40 workers of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJM) after a protest march by the BJP’s youth wing, accusing the Congress of insulting  Dr B R Ambedkar, turned violent on Thursday leading to vandalism of the Congress party office in south Mumbai.

According to police,  Yuva Morcha workers, who reached the Congress office, initially showed placards and raised slogans against party leader and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.

However, soon, the protest turned violent with the protesters throwing ink on posters and banners of Congress leaders pelting stones and vandalising the Congress office, police said.

A large contingent of Mumbai Police was deployed outside the Congress office and in order to control the protesters,  the police used lathis to disperse the crowd and detained some of the protesters.

Slamming the BJP over this, Congress demanded stringent action the workers who vandalised the Congress office.

“This is what the BJP and Sangh Parivar have always done when they have heard Babasaheb’s name— attack and vandalism. Look at the level BJP’s goons are stooping to just to save Amit Shah and divert attention from the atrocious statement he made against Mahamanav, Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar,” Mumbai congress chief and MP Varsha Gaikwad said, referring to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks about Ambedkar.

“Around 50 BJP workers came to our Mumbai office, threw chairs and tore posters, vandalised property. Our brave workers resisted their attacks. We shall be proceeding legally against this,” she said

Urging Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to take immediate strict action, said added: “Is this the kind of political decorum in a progressive state like Maharashtra? Shame!,”

The Azad Maidan police on Thursday night registered an FIR against BJYM Mumbai chief Tejinder Tiwana and around 40 member of the organisation on the complaint of Mandar Pawar, executive president Congress Bhavan, said DCP zone 1 Pravin Mundhe.

As many as 14 people were detained from the spot of the incident by the police.

All the accused have been booked under sections 74, 118(1), 189 (1)(c), (2), (3) , 190, 191(2),192, 324(3),333, of Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and section 135 of Bombay Police act.

Further investigation is on and the situation is peaceful, DCP Mundhe added.

Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar said that the attack was made in an attempt to divert attention from the statement made by Shah in parliament about Babasaheb Ambedkar.

“The police are always present at Azad Maidan. Did they not have an information about this protest and attack? Action should also be taken against the police if they do not take action,” he said.

The ruling Mahyuti leaders, however, said that the opposition is indulging in politics in the Ambedkar ‘s name

“Amit Shah has already given explanation on his statement but the opposition is doing politics in the name of Babasaheb. The Congress does not deserve to take Babasaheb’s name, because they have been humiliating anf insulting Babasaheb. It is not right to do politics in his name. Everyone should respect the constitution”, said state Minister Sanjay Shirsat from Shiv Sena .
