Addressing the audience in his home town, Fadnavis said, “The overall conduct and functioning of the police department is significant for any state. Law and order makes or mars the state’s image in public and directly or indirectly determines its socio-economic progress.”

Acknowledging the challenges the police face and the hard work the force puts in, he said, “Police department is the most important factor based on which evaluation of a state is done…” He said digital police stations would make smart cities more secure. The government has decided to increase forensic infrastructure and make mobile forensic units available in each district.

“We are integrating fingerprint, DNA and jail data. Very soon, Maharashtra police will be at par with those of developed countries,” Fadnavis said.

The chief minister said, “I am happy that rate of conviction has increased to 32 per cent from 8 per cent. It is our endeavour to enhance it to 50 percent in the next few months.”

“Rate of conviction is an important parameter to decide how well the state is doing on the law and order front. If conviction rate is high, it would automatically restore confidence of people in the policing and the system,” he explained.

“If individuals who commit crime go unpunished, it defeats the purpose of law and order and leaves citizens vulnerable,” said Fadnavis.
