With the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections approaching, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday held a closed-door meeting with the party’s Shakha Pramukhs from across Mumbai, urging them to intensify grassroots outreach and start preparing the cadre for a full-scale campaign.

Addressing office-bearers at Shiv Sena Bhavan, Thackeray asked each Shakha Pramukh to personally reach out to at least 300 families in their wards. He also instructed them to activate the party’s organisational machinery including group heads, polling agents and leaders of frontal organisations, in a bid to consolidate support across Mumbai’s 227 municipal wards.

Sources present at the meeting said that Thackeray stressed the need to “highlight the development work” done by the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena in the BMC over the past two decades, while also exposing the alleged “corruption, irregularities and declining civic standards” under the Eknath Shinde-led administration, which has been running the BMC through appointed administrators since the elected body’s term ended in March 2022.

“This is a crucial election for Mumbai, and the people need to be reminded of the Shiv Sena’s legacy in transforming the city’s civic infrastructure,” a senior party functionary said.

The meeting was held just days after the Maharashtra Urban Development Department issued a notification laying out the schedule for finalising ward boundaries across municipal corporations, including Mumbai.

Final ward boundaries for the three corporations including the BMC will be notified by September 4.
