The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) is set to increase its double-decker fleet size. In next nine months, a total of 900 air-conditioned double-decker buses will be added to the fleet via wet lease. Additionally, 20 new open double-decker buses will also be bought. A tender in this regard will be floated soon, said a BEST official.
BEST started operations of AC double-decker buses from February 21 this year. At present, a total of 35 AC double-decker are part of the fleet. Also, for the convenience of passengers new AC double-decker buses will be introduced soon in South Mumbai and 15 in Mumbai’s suburbs. An official said that the demand for AC buses is more in suburbs.
As per BEST, the purchase order to supply a total of 200 AC double-decker buses has been given to Switch Mobility, of which 35 have already been received and the remaining buses will be received by the end of March 2024. Similarly, Harit Mobility has been given the purchase order to supply 700 buses. Of which, 50 buses will be received in the month of December 2023 and 100 buses every month from January 2024 to June 2024 and 50 buses in July 2024.
BEST said the double-decker buses will not be discontinued under any circumstances.
