The preliminary work for the much-awaited Airoli Katai Naka Road Project Phase 3 is expected to begin soon, said the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is implementing the project. The project is being executed in three phases. The construction of an elevated road from National Highway (NH-4) to Katai Naka is Phase 3. According to MMRDA, the work has been awarded recently. The contractor will start the preliminary work like surveys and geotechnical investigations soon. The awarded contract cost is Rs 1981.17 crore. The construction period for this phase is 48 months.
The Phase 1 and 2 works have been completed 90% and 75% respectively and are expected to be opened for traffic by October next year.
Phase 1 includes the construction of an elevated & twin tunnel road having 3.43km length from Thane Belapur Road to NH-4. The length of elevated portion is about 0.94 km having 3 + 3 lane. It includes construction of twin tunnel of 1.68 km in length having 4+4 lane. The construction of the elevated portion is complete whereas the work of twin tunnel is about 90 % complete. The revised contract cost of Phase 1 is about Rs 556 crore.
Whereas the Phase 2 is about the construction of elevated portion from Airoli Bridge to Thane Belapur Road. The length of elevated portion has 3+3 lane. It is proposed to be merged with the elevated road of Phase 1 at Thane Belapur Road near Airoli station, which is further proposed to connect to the tunnel at Parsik Hill. Construction of the Phase 2 is about 75 % complete. The revised contract cost of Phase-II is about Rs 395 crore.
The construction of Airoli Katai Naka Road project is taken up under Extended Mumbai Urban Infrastructure Project (MUIP). The entire project alignment starts from Airoli end of Mulund-Airoli Bridge, crosses Thane Belapur Road and further NH-4 (old) and connects the Katai Naka-Badlapur Road crossing the Kalyan-Shil Road at Katai Naka. The total length of the project is 12.3km.
Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, commissioner, MMRDA said, “The Airoli-Katai Naka Road Project is set to provide seamless and efficient connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region by significantly reducing travel time, cutting fuel consumption and alleviating congestion on key arterial roads. This project aligns with our vision of sustainability and urban liveability.”
Presently, commuters travelling by road from Mumbai to Kalyan, Badlapur etc. have to travel either via Thane, Mumbra, Kalyan Phata and Shil-Kalyan Road or Via Mankhurd, Vashi, Mahape, Kalyan Phata and Shil-Kalyan Road.
With the completion of the project, the distance between Mulund and Katai Naka will reduce by seven to eight km, thereby reduction in travel time by 45 minutes to 1 hour in peak traffic hours. This will also decongest Thane-Belapur Road, Mahape Road, Shilphata and Kalyan Phata junctions of NH-4 (old) and the Shil Kalyan Road.
