The Mumbai Police has begun a probe after a man from Raipur in Chhattisgarh called up the Bandra police station, threatening to kill Shah Rukh Khan and demanded Rs 50 lakh from the Bollywood superstar, who lives in the Carter Road area within the police station’s limits. The call, which was received on Tuesday, was answered by constable Santosh Ghodke.

The police have registered an FIR under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 308(4) and 351 (3)(4), related to extortion and criminal intimidation.

The caller identified himself as ‘Hindustani’ and told the police that he was standing outside ‘Mannat’ and if he is not paid Rs 50 lakh he would kill the “Don-2 actor”.

The police found that the call came from a mobile number registered in the name of one Faizan Khan in Raipur. Teams were dispatched to nab the caller with the help of local police in Raipur.

When the police located Faizan Khan in Raipur, he turned out to be a 42-year-old advocate, who told the police that his mobile phone was stolen on November 2, the actor’s birthday.

“He has also filed a complaint with the local police regarding the theft of his phone. He claimed someone might have misused his stolen phone to make the threat call. The Mumbai Police, after questioning him, served him a notice and called him to Mumbai for investigation,” said Ajay Kumar, an IPS officer currently holding charge as CSP, Civil Lines sub-division in Raipur.

Faizan Khan, speaking to mediapersons in Raipur, said he had earlier complained to the Mumbai Police against Shah Rukh Khan over a dialogue in his movie ‘Anjaam’ (1994) referring to deer hunting. “I hail from Rajasthan. The Bishnoi community (which is from Rajasthan) is my friend. It is in their religion to protect deer. So, if a Muslim says something like this about deer, it is condemnable. Therefore, I raised an objection,” he said.

“Whoever made the call from my phone, it seems intentional. I think it is a conspiracy against me,” he added.

The police have also stepped up security outside Shah Rukh Khan’s home in Bandra. The actor had received threats in 2023 after the release of his films ‘Pathan’ and ‘Jawan’.

Last month, the Mumbai Police received threat calls and messages against actor Salman Khan, who has been the target of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, which fired gunshots outside his home a few months earlier this year.
