As admissions to engineering courses have concluded in Maharashtra, as many as 1,66,746 out of 2,02,883 available seats have been filled, leaving over 36,000 seats vacant.

While the total number of admissions has increased compared to last year’s 1,49,078 confirmed seats, a significant rise in intake capacity has resulted in slightly more vacant seats than last year’s 31,092.

New-age engineering branches such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine-learning, and data science remain popular among candidates.

Whereas among traditional branches, computer engineering has witnessed great admissions as opposed to other branches such as civil, mechanical and electrical engineering.

Further, indicating a positive shift toward gender balance, the percentage of girls in total admissions has increased this year.

Among total confirmed admissions, this year 1,04,550 are boys and 62,196 are girls — last year it was 96, 326 boys and 52,751 girls.

Although the number of boys continues to exceed that of girls, their percentage share has increased to 37.30 from 35.38 last year.

Although the Centralised Admission Process (CAP) conducted by the Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell concluded on September 5, institute-level rounds wrapped up late on Monday evening.

After four CAP rounds, more than 60,000 — close to 30 per cent — of total seats had remained vacant.

However, after the institute- level round concluded, more than half of those seats were filled.

Noting that this is a regular trend, an official from the CET Cell, said, “Many students wait for institution-level rounds hoping to bag a seat in their desired branch of engineering or a college. Additionally, as students have the facility to cancel admissions confirmed through CAP, if they bag a desired seat in the institution-level rounds, many students take that chance and there is a fair amount of reshuffling during these last rounds. Last year too, at the end of CAP, there was a significant vacancy. However a major part of it was filled in institution level rounds.”

As per data shared by the CET Cell, new-age specialised computer science (CSE) engineering courses such as CSE in AI and Data Science, CSE in Cyber Security, CSE in Internet of Things and Block Chain Technology, CSE in Software Engineering among others, which have lesser seats than others, have recorded over 90 percent occupancy.

Whereas the traditional CSE and Computer engineering which have significant number of intake capacity has seen more than 80 per cent of them filled.

These branches are closely followed by Electronics and Telecommunication, Information Technology, Automation and Robotics, and Chemical Engineering, all of which have registered more than 80 per cent admissions.

Meanwhile, traditional branches such as Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering have recorded over 70 per cent admissions.

According to engineering colleges, demand for any branch is a reflection of current industry needs, “Candidates are more inclined toward branches which are more likely to help them get jobs. And as opposed to the limited scope of the traditional engineering branches, new-age fields are emerging with greater pace,” said the principal of an engineering college.

As per the data of region-wise admissions shared by the CET Cell, with 70,251 admissions Pune recorded the highest number of admissions, like last year.

This is also because Pune has the most engineering seats to offer. Although nowhere close to the number of total admissions, Mumbai region follows in second position with 31,930 admissions — a slight increase from last year’s 29,048 admissions.

Replicating last year’s trend, Amravati region has recorded the least number of admissions at 7,996. The region also has the least intake capacity.
