The Punjab government has spent Rs 3.50 crore on giving away bicycles to girl students in Ludhiana district.

Announcing this here on Sunday,Public Works Minister Sharanjit Singh Dhillon said under this scheme in Ludhiana district,Rs 3.50 crore had been spent on providing bicycles to 13,001 girl students of classes XI and XII in 2011-12.

Dhillon said that over 1.5 lakh girl students of Punjab were all set to ride new bicycles to their schools with the state government finalising the plan to distribute these bicycles within three months. The state government had already set aside Rs 47 crore for Mai Bhaggo Vidya Scheme under which all girls studying in classes IX to XII of government schools would be gifted bicycles by the Punjab government.

He said that instructions had been issued to the district education officers to prepare lists of the eligible girl students.
