Smiling Buddha declares: We will be back at Writers’

Just a week before the counting on May 13 when everyone will come to know the next occupant of the Writers’ Buildings,Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Friday was in a jovial mood and asserted that Left Front would return power in the state for the eight consecutive time and that too with a comfortable majority.

Speaking to mediapersons at CPM state headquarters at Alimuddin Street, the chief minister, however, did not lose any opportunity to hit back at his detractors.

With a part of Maoist-affected Junglemahal voting on Saturday and the rest on May 10,Bhattacharjee once again alleged a “nexus” between rival Trinamool Congress,Chhatradhar Mahato’s PCAPA and the Maoists.

“There are 14 seats, which will go to polls in the last phase. But violent activities are taking place there. There are cases of intimidation and there are even instances when candidates of our party are being threatened with dire consequences if they failed to withdraw their nominations. You must defeat Trinamool in order to defeat the Maoists,’’ said Bhattacharjee, who will address no more rallies.

When asked whether the Maoist problem needed a political solution,Bhattacharjee said “It is not only a lawand order problem. We have to tackle it administratively. It is a complex problem. At the same time it is a problem of underdevelopment and that aspect we have taken care of.”

Elaborating his government’s efforts to bring development in the Junglemahal, the chief minister said: “So far 27,000 pattas have been distributed among the landless poor in the forests area. Rice is being distributed at subsidised rate, schools have been set up and scholarships are being awarded. Health infrastructure is also being strengthened. In fact work was stalled for some time because of Maoist menace. Now things have started moving again.’’

He once again lambasted Union Home Minister P Chidambaram for the latter’s remark that Bengal was the “worst-governed state in the country”. Telling him not to ‘play doctor’ as he did not need his advice in administering West Bengal,Bhattacharjee said: “What is happening in Kashmir,Andhra Pradesh? I ask Chidambaram to concentrate on his own job. I know my job,” said the chief minster.

The CM also said that people of the country would soon receive a “gift” from the Congress and Trinamool’s UPA government in the form of a fuel price hike. The Left parties have already called a rally on May 12 in in Kolkata to protest against the proposed fuel price hike.

He regretted the killing of villagers in Netai allegedly by CPM cadres two months ago. “We have learnt a lesson from that. The incident should not have happened,’’ he added.
