Mobile teams to check firecracker noise levels

The state government will send out teams to various districts and adjoining areas of Kolkata.

The state government will send out teams to various districts and adjoining areas of Kolkata to check if firecrackers above the noise level of 90 decibel at 5 metres from the source are not burst, said state minister for enviornment Sudarshan Ghosh Dastidar Friday.

The National Green Tribunal on October 21 had ordered relaxation norm of the firecracker noise norm in Bengal from 90 decibel at 5 metres from the source to 125 decibel at 4 metres from the source.

However, the state government fiercely opposed the move and said it would stick to the 90 decibel level already in prevailing in the state.

“Even today the Green Tribunal held a hearing of Firecrackers Manufacturers Association and the status quo remained. We want to make it clear that bursting of firecrackers above the noise level of more than 90 decibel is prohibited and a punishable offence,’’ the minister said.

The minister said 26 mobile teams will be visiting areas in Kolkata and adjoining districts to check the level and penalise the offenders. The 10 PCB offices will function as centres where complaints will be received,he added.
