A leopard killed a minor boy in Delwara area of Rajsamand district in Rajasthan on Wednesday night. According to officials, the leopard picked up the child (2.6 years) from the courtyard of a house while he was sleeping with his mother and walked into a jungle. Later, only some body parts were recovered from the jungle, around 2 kms away from the house.

According to information, Sureshi Devi, wife of Kesulal Gameti, resident of Sarkhurd village in Kailashpuri, Udaipur, had come to her sister’s house in Godwa village in Rajsamand. On Wednesday night, Sureshi and her son Nitesh were sleeping in the courtyard when a leopard entered the premises between 2 am and 3 am and picked up the boy. Hearing the cries of the boy, the mother woke up only to see the leopard walking away with her son in its mouth.

DCF Rajsamand, Sudarshan Sharma while talking to The Indian Express said that this is the first such incident reported from the district.

“It is worrisome that such an incident has happened here. The house had goats and sheep and so we suspect that the leopard must have come for them. However, it took the boy instead. The head of the boy and some parts of the intestine were recovered around 2 kms from the house. Villagers followed the tracks of the leopard and found some more remaining parts. Our team is working to capture the leopard. We plan to put it in a zoo.”

When asked if the leopard could be termed a man-eater, Sudarshan said it was too early to say anything at this stage as this is the first such incident that has been reported in the area. “We are tracking the movement of the leopard,” he said.
