Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said that Gujarat had received a cumulative Foreign Direct Investment (FDI)of 55 billion USD in the last two decades. Patel said this at the Diplomats’ Meet in New Delhi organised by the Gujarat government Friday to kick off the 10th edition of the Vibrant Gujarat Summit to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 10, 2024.
Diplomats of more than 119 countries participated in the meet which was also attended by external affairs minister S Jaishankar.
Addressing the diplomats, Jaishankar said that Gujarat was emerging as a leader state in new initiatives like electric vehicles, aviation and semiconductor. Jaishankar added that a series of all of India’s special initiatives is happening in Gujarat.
According to Patel, the 10th Vibrant Gujarat’s theme ‘Gateway to the Future’ “is set to further the PM’s vision of a Viksit Bharat (Developed India) at 2047”, as per a government release.
Patel said that because of Gujarat’s “investor friendly policies” it had got an FDI of 21.9 billion USD in 2021. Companies from US, Japan, France, Germany, Netherlands, UK, Switzerland, Italy, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar have invested in various sectors in Gujarat, said the CM.
Earlier in the day Patel met and invited prominent industrialists to invest in Gujarat and participate in the 10th edition of the VGS.
He addressed them at a curtain raiser event of Vibrant Gujarat held in New Delhi. According to a statement, over 1,500 investors and entrepreneurs attended the event.
With Vibrant Gujarat Summit completing 20 years, Patel praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “In 2003, when the idea of a business and investment summit was unheard of, he came up with Vibrant Summit with the spirit of ‘one earth, one family, one future’,” the statement quoted Patel as saying.
It added that the CM highlighted the “grand success of two decades of Vibrant Gujarat, which Gujarat celebrated as ‘summit of success’ in Modi’s presence”. “He pointed out that the seed of Vibrant Summit, sowed by the PM, has now matured into a banyan tree, furthering Team Gujarat’s commitment to carry forward the Vibrant Gujarat Summit.”
The statement further mentioned: “The CM also named Gujarat as the ‘most preferred destination’ in the production of semiconduction and display fab. He expressed that Gujarat is the first state to implement the semiconductor policy in the country. In the renewable energy sector, Gujarat has also taken initiatives in line with the PM’s vision of a net zero economy. He stated that Gujarat contributes 15 per cent share of the country’s total renewable energy capacity. The state’s renewable energy capacity has reached 20 GW. Furthermore, Gujarat has set its target of generating 100 GW of renewable energy through green hydrogen mission.”
CEO of Arcelor Mittal, Dilip Oommen; Maruti Suzuki MD and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi and CEO of U K India Business Council Group, Richard McCallum, shared their experiences related to the Vibrant Summit at the event. President of ASSOCHAM and chairman of Welspun Group, B K Goenka, praised Gujarat’s business prowess and investment-friendly policy environment, the statement said.
Before the event, Partel met a number of industrialists in one-to-one meetings. They included country head of Seoul Semiconductor, D J Kim; managing director of Borosil Limited, Shreevar Kheruka; founder and CEO of Paytm, V S Sharma; vice-chairman of JK Paper Limited, Harsh Pati Singhania; president of Tata Renewable Energy Limited, Ashish Khanna; founder and MD of Okinawa E-Vehicles, Jitendra Sharma and chairman of Welspun, B K Goenka, among others.
