Innovation, research-oriented teaching with emphasis on live projects, and focus on inclusivity are few of the reasons that helped Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma (ARSD) College secure a place among top 10 colleges — at rank 6 — in NIRF ranking for the second year in a row, according to the principal and faculty.
“We stood 5th under NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) in 2017… Everyone was surprised as to how a college as unpopular as ours managed to get a good rank,” said Principal Gyantosh Jha, adding, the college has always “focussed on innovation and research-oriented teaching”. He said that despite the absence of facilities like a hostel on campus or a rich history unlike some other DU colleges, ARSD’s effort to improve quality of research and innovation has helped the institute.
The NIRF ranking framework evaluates institutions on five parameters which are Teaching and Learning Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RP), Graduation Outcome (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI), and Perception (PR). The college’s RP score has shown a marked increase from 30.54 in 2017 to 80.54 in 2023. Its perception score has also shot up from 0.21 to 39.67.
In 2022, the college saw 31 research papers by its students and faculty being published in international publications, most of them focussing on Material Sciences and Machine Learning.
“Our approach towards research-oriented teaching is mainly through Live projects. For instance, we encourage students to visit a particular monument and push them to interact with tourists and people living around the monument. We then ask them to submit detailed project reports,” said Deepankar, Assistant Professor, History.
Authorities said the college is making progress in the Outreach and Inclusivity parameter by ensuring participation of women, and students from economically and socially backward backgrounds along with those who are physically challenged. “We are in the process of waiving off tuition fees for women, economically weaker sections and socially backward students,” said Manvendra Yadav, Assistant Professor.
