Weeks after a man was stabbed to death in Northwest Delhi’s Ashok Vihar amid an attempt by two minors and another suspect to snatch his phone, the 23-year-old accused who fled the crime scene was arrested in the robbery-murder case following an encounter on Monday night, said police. The accused has been identified as Ritik.

Following a tip-off, a trap was laid near Prem Bari Pul on Monday night, said police. “Around 10:30 pm, a suspicious person was seen exiting from Shaheed Udham Singh Park and walking towards the nala (open drain)…Inspector Somvir Singh instructed the suspect to stop, but instead, the man started running along the nala towards the railway tracks,” said DCP North West Bhisham Singh.

“Inspector Singh immediately alerted the raiding team members to pursue the suspect and personally began chasing him… The suspect pulled out a pistol-like weapon…with intent to kill, and opened fire on the raiding team, narrowly missing an officer,” he added.

According to the police, when Ritik attempted to reload and shoot again, he was hit by retaliatory fire on his leg. He was subsequently disarmed and taken into custody. During the encounter, Ritik sustained a bullet wound to his left leg and was subsequently shifted to Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital for treatment.

According to police, on June 10, Amit Kumar, a resident of Ashok Vihar, was admitted to the same hospital after sustaining stab injuries inflicted by unknown assailants. Despite efforts, Kumar succumbed to his injuries the same day, leading to the registration of a murder case at Ashok Vihar police station.

Police subsequently apprehended three minors who allegedly admitted that the stabbing took place while trying to snatch Kumar’s mobile phone from him. During the struggle, police said, the minors allegedly stabbed Kumar while Ritik fled with his mobile and other personal belongings.

Police added BNS sections 309(6) (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) and 317(2) (dishonestly receiving stolen property) to the initial FIR containing murder charges.
