Union Public Service Commission topper Tina Dabi returned to her alma mater, Lady Shri Ram (LSR) College, Thursday to interact with students. Addressing a packed auditorium, Dabi said her aim as an IAS officer is to set a “good example” of integrity for her subordinates, and work for women and students.

“I want set a very good example for my subordinates. Being a woman myself, I would like to work on women-related issues. I’d like to focus on the education sector as well. I will visit all schools and colleges in my district and keep motivating girls to fight whatever discrimination they are facing, and inspire them to achieve what they want.”

Dabi graduated in 2014 from LSR with a degree in Political Science (Hons). Praising the college, Dabi said LSR made her into who she was and taught her “progressive values”. “LSR teaches you to have a very compassionate heart and turns you into a leader. So seize the moment and seize the opportunity and become what you want to be in life… We are women but it is a man’s world, so to fight it you need to develop a very thick skin,” she said.

Talking to the media after the interaction, Dabi said her dream of working on women’s issues would continue despite being given the Rajasthan cadre and not Haryana, as was her first choice. “I think Rajasthan has its own women-related issues. The child sex ratio in Rajasthan is not good. We also need more women holding key positions in panchayats. It’s a very promising thing and it’s something even I would want to encourage in whichever district I’m posted in,” she said.

On the flogging of seven Dalits allegedly by gau rakshaks in Gujarat and the subsequent protests, Dabi said, “It’s very unfortunate that these things are happening. But I believe that you have to work with the system and always have faith in the system. It’s the only solution.”
