For years, the wide roads, trees and parks standing alongside decades-old two-floor government housing buildings were symbolic of Nauroji Nagar. Today, the two- and three-room dwellings with a balcony set up, a stone’s throw away from the famed Sarojini Nagar market of Delhi, have given way to 12 ten-storey buildings housing the World Trade Center (WTC).

It is among the several projects that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate on Friday. This comes ahead of the Delhi Assembly polls, expected to be held in February.

The PM will also inaugurate the newly constructed flats for dwellers of Jhuggi Jhopri (JJ) clusters under the In-Situ Slum Rehabilitation Project in Northwest Delhi’s Ashok Vihar. The second such project in the city after Kalkaji, it has 1,675 flats.

“For every Rs 25 lakh spent on construction of a flat by the government, eligible beneficiaries pay less than 7% of the total amount, comprising Rs 1.42 lakh as a nominal contribution and Rs 30,000 for five years of maintenance,” a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s office said.

Standing on 24.96 acres, the WTC, meanwhile, has a built-up area of around 34 lakh sqft. The ultra-modern corporate offices are serviced by a three-level basement for parking and services, and a retail and sky top restaurant, the NBCC said in a statement.

The project, which started in 2020, was once home to a General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) colony, housing 628 government flats. In 2016, the Union Cabinet approved a redevelopment project of seven GPRA colonies at an estimated cost of Rs 32,835 crore. The plan included construction of approximately 25,000 modern dwelling units and 63.03 lakh sqft of commercial and office space, replacing 12,970 old dilapidated GPRA flats.

Four years after its official start, the project now stands complete, with all floors ready for interior fit-outs by buyers, NBCC said in a statement.

With facilities like an in-house sewage and water treatment plants, solar energy power and a centralised waste collection system, the first office of the new Nauroji Nagar landmark was inaugurated on January 17 by Cooperation Minister Amit Shah for the Central Registrar of Cooperative Societies under the Ministry of Cooperation.

At present, the building already houses 15 government and private entities like IIFCO, Exclusive Motors and NHIDCL, while fit-outs are being done in the offices of other buyers like IRCTC and HPCL.

Other projects

– Alongside the WTC, the GPRA Type-II Quarters at Sarojini Nagar will also be inaugurated. Over 2,500 houses spread across 28 towers have come up in place of the old government residential quarters in Sarojini Nagar, many of which were in a dilapidated condition. The new colony will have rainwater harvesting systems, in-situ sewage and water treatment plants, and solar-powered waste compactors.

– The PM will also inaugurate CBSE’s Integrated Office Complex at Dwarka, which includes an advanced data centre.
– The foundation stone of Delhi University’s Eastern Campus at Surajmal Vihar and Western Campus at Dwarka, alongside the Veer Savarkar College at Roshanpura, Najafgarh, will also be laid.
