The Southwest monsoon advanced into Haryana in the early hours of Sunday, leading to heavy rainfall and waterlogging on various stretches.

Areas that were affected included Civil Hospital at Sector 10; Southern Peripheral Road (SPR); Basai village; Subhash Chowk; Rajeev Chowk and Narsinghpur. Though water at Subhash Chowk receded later in the day, pumps were installed at Sector 10, Khandsa Chowk, Narsinghpur, and Rajeev Chowk.

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) stated that a drain has also been constructed to channelise stormwater at Sector 66 on the SPR. Pumping machinery was also installed at Umang Bhardwaj Chowk, the GMDA spokesperson said.

According to the India Meteorological Department, conditions are favourable for further advance of the Southwest monsoon into some more parts of Haryana and Punjab during the next two days. Heavy rainfall at isolated places with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds (speed 40-50 kmph) is very likely over Punjab and Haryana mainly during June 25 to 26, the IMD said.

To avoid waterlogging and a flood-like situation, the district administration said officials have been directed to inspect critical points prone to waterlogging and ensure that pump operators are available round the clock. The Additional Deputy Commissioner-cum CEO of Gurgaon DDMA will be overall in-charge to keep a close watch on critical points along with the above-mentioned officers so that the problem of waterlogging does not arise.

On Sunday, Gurgaon tehsil recorded 52 mm of rainfall while Kadipur sub tehsil recorded 82 mm; Harsaru sub tehsil received 82 mm; Wazirabad reported 80 mm; Badshahpur got 25 mm; Sohna tehsil recorded 72 mm; Manesar tehsil received 53 mm; and Farrukhnagar tehsil 34 mm rainfall.
