A day after Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was allegedly attacked by a man during a Jan Sunwai (public hearing) at her Civil Lines Camp Office, adjacent to her official residence, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has revised her security detail.
As per police sources, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) will now handle the internal security ring around the Chief Minister, while Delhi Police personnel will manage the outer perimeter.
“While CRPF commandos will look after the Delhi CM’s internal security, Delhi Police personnel will remain in the outer ring,” sources from the police said.
The CM has been accorded ‘Z’ category security cover by the MHA, under which six Personal Security Officers (PSOs) will now be provided by the CRPF. These PSOs were earlier drawn from the Delhi Police, sources said.
Other components of the security detail — including escorts, watchers, and eight static armed guards — will remain unchanged and continue to be manned by Delhi Police personnel, the sources added.
CRPF personnel will also remain deployed at her residence, sources said.
The CM will continue to have ‘Z-plus’ category from the Delhi Police Headquarters. The chief minister’s security cover is generally handled by the security division of the Delhi Police, which is also responsible for providing security to other ministers.
On Wednesday, the accused, Rajeshbhai Khimjibhai Sakriya, 41, from Rajkot, Gujarat, had allegedly entered the CM’s Camp Office posing as a complainant. Those present in the office at the time of the incident said Sakriya approached her with some papers in hand during the weekly public meeting and then attacked her around 8.30 am, barely 30 minutes after the meeting began.
He was arrested and sent to five-day police custody.
Police sources said Sakriya’s questioning and mobile phone records revealed that he was in Ujjain for prayers at a temple before coming to Delhi. “On reaching Delhi, he saw Gupta’s posters and watched a reel where she is talking about stray dogs. He then decided to attack her,” a senior police officer had said.
