Less than a week after she reported to the police that her husband had gone missing, a 35-year-old woman in Gurgaon was arrested on Sunday for killing him, said officers. She had allegedly plotted the murder with a neighbour — who she had an affair with — after her daughter saw an objectionable video of them and told her father. Another man, the neighbour’s uncle who helped them bury the body in a pit, has been arrested.

The woman’s neighbour was arrested on August 1 after she accused him of raping her in March and threatened to make an objectionable video viral. She said that she suspected that he was behind her husband’s disappearance. This was after she had filed the missing person’s complaint on July 28, and claimed that she had last seen her husband two days before that. “She (on July 31) filed a false rape case against her lover to deflect suspicion. However, police interrogation unravelled the conspiracy,” a police spokesperson said.

As the investigation deepened, police found that the woman had been in a relationship with the neighbour for over a year, said officers. The body of the 37-year-old victim was found after the accused admitted killing the man during questioning by police following his arrest in the rape case.

“The murder was plotted after the victim’s daughter, one of the couple’s two children, recently discovered a compromising video of the woman and her lover on his phone and told her father. Fearing being exposed, the woman and her lover devised a plan to kill her husband,” a police spokesperson said.

The duo, police said, meticulously planned the murder — they browsed the Internet, including YouTube, for methods to kill the man and dispose of his body.

On July 26, the woman’s neighbour allegedly strangled her husband with a rope and buried him in the pit, which he had asked his uncle – who rears cattle for a living — to dig in a village.

The woman stayed in constant contact with her neighbour over the phone throughout the execution of the crime, police said, adding that the woman filed a missing person complaint to mislead the probe.

On Sunday, the woman was produced before a local court and placed in judicial custody, while her neighbour’s uncle was remanded in five days of police custody for further questioning.
