Legislators in Delhi will now enjoy a pay hike of 67 per cent with the government notification on increase in salary being passed last week. The hike comes after a gap of 12 years.
While the Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) were earning Rs 54,000 till now, they will be paid Rs 90,000 per month effective February 2023. The salaries and allowances of the Chief Minister, ministers, Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Chief Whip, and Leader of Opposition have also gone up from Rs 72,000 per month to Rs 1.7 lakh per month.
The law and justice department of the Delhi Government issued a notification on March 9 regarding the hike in salary and allowances of legislators and ministers. Last year, the Delhi Assembly passed five bills to increase the salaries and allowances of ministers, MLAs and others by 66.67 per cent. This was supported by BJP MLAs as well. The proposal was then sent to the President for approval.
The basic salary of MLAs has been increased to Rs 30,000 per month from Rs 12,000 earlier, while that of ministers, Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Chief Whip and Leader of Opposition has been hiked to Rs 60,000 per month from Rs 20,000 earlier.
The constituency allowance increased from Rs 6,000 to Rs 10,000; telephone bill allowance from Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000; secretariat allowance from Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000; and travel allowance of MLAs from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh.
In 2015, the AAP government had sent a proposal to the Centre proposing to hike the salaries of MLAs to around Rs 2.10 lakh per month, including all allowances, but it was rejected.
