Days after CM Rekha Gupta was attacked during a Jan Sunwai at her Civil Lines camp office, police on Monday said that a knife, which the attacker had initially planned to use, has been recovered.
Rajesh Sakriya, the accused, had taken the knife from a fruit vendor, to attack the CM, said officers. Police had earlier said that Sakriya, who hails from Rajkot in Gujarat, threw the knife before reaching the public hearing due to heightened security. “After he arrived at the New Delhi Railway station, he headed to Hanuman temple in Karol Bagh. While leaving the station, he picked up a knife from a fruit vendor,” an officer said.
Police made the second arrest in the case on Sunday by arresting Sakriya’s friend Tehsin, who they claim were aware about his plans.
Sakriya and Tehsin were both sent to 14 days judicial custody. Police said they recovered the knife from a cemetery on the Rajpur road.
Officials had earlier said that they both knew each other since childhood days and before leaving Rajkot, Sakriya had told him that he will do “something big” in Delhi. Tehsin had told him he would give him all sorts of support and help and also transferred Rs 2,000 via UPI to him.
