The Delhi High Court on Tuesday issued notice on a plea highlighting problems related to “new age” cyber crimes such as “digital arrest” scams and “forging of court orders” including those of the Supreme Court as well as FIRs and arrest warrants, to extort “settlement money” from people.
A division bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora sought the stand of the respondents — the Centre, and Reserve Bank of India among others — in the matter, and kept the next hearing on March 19.
The public interest litigation (PIL) plea has sought directions to the authorities to frame guidelines for better coordination between the agencies for a “swifter investigation” of cybercrimes.
The petitioners’ advocates, Akshya and Urvashi Bhatia, have sought that the authorities in whose names the scams are being run should run an “awareness campaigns”. It has also sought directions for simplification of procedures to file complaints against cyber crimes.
In the previous hearing, the HC had orally observed that cybercrime is a “genuine problem” and that the “whole policing system has to be reformed” to gear up to this “new challenge”.
