Police in the Southeast Delhi district launched a crackdown on organised crime under ‘Operation Aaghat’, a district-wide initiative aimed at reining in criminals.
The drive, rolled out on Friday, was led by Joint Commissioner of Police (Southern Range) Sanjay Jain and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast District) Hemant Tiwari, with close supervision by Additional DCPs Aishwarya Sharma and Ishan Bhardwaj.
Around 70 people were arrested for various crimes, said police.
Described as a “strike on organised crime”, the operation brought together ACPs, SHOs and their teams in a coordinated effort to target crime hotspots, step up surveillance, and keep habitual offenders in check.
Officials said the campaign was designed not just to curb criminal activity but to deter budding offenders and reassure the public of the police’s presence.
The measures included increased patrolling, intelligence-led identification of suspects, and coordinated raids across vulnerable pockets. Police also focused on community engagement to encourage residents to report suspicious activity and rebuild trust between citizens and law enforcement.
“During the operation, the Southeast District Police has achieved significant success, including the recovery of 14 country-made pistols, one sophisticated pistol, 24 cartridges, and 16 knives, with the arrest of 28 persons,” said DCP Tiwari.
“We seized 6,338 quarters of illegal liquor and arrested 13 people. We also recovered narcotic substances, including 5.9 kg of ganja, 51 gm of heroin, 54 gm of MDMA, and a motorcycle, along with the arrest of nine persons.”
“Further, 13 gamblers were arrested and Rs 78,350 recovered. Five property offenders were arrested, with three mobile phones and two motorcycles recovered. Two absconding criminals were arrested under two different NDPS cases,” said Tiwari.
Additionally, police also carried out 92 preventive actions under Sections 40A, 40B, 72, 126 and 170 of the BNSS, and seized 103 vehicles under the Delhi Police Act.
Calling the operation “an inevitable curse for criminals,” the Southeast District Police said the drive was aimed at creating a lasting deterrent. “We are committed to uprooting organised crime in all its forms and ensuring that citizens feel safe in their neighbourhoods,” a senior officer said.
The police have appealed to residents to support the campaign by sharing information on illegal activities and cooperating with enforcement efforts. “Together, we can build a safer and more secure community,” the appeal stated.
In a parallel crackdown, the Northeast district police conducted large-scale cordon and search operations on Friday night, raiding 39 locations as part of a coordinated effort to target wanted criminals and crime syndicates, said police.
The raids involved more than 350 personnel, including the DCP, Additional DCPs, and all ACsP of the district, and resulted in the arrest of five accused persons.
Police recovered three semi-automatic pistols, two country guns (desi kattas), 20 live cartridges, a laptop, seven mobile phones, and unaccounted cash amounting to Rs 18.7 lakh. Four FIRs under the Arms Act were registered, and those arrested include Abbas, Ishrat, Altaf, Ayaan, and Armaan, all residents of Welcome.
