Several top Army officers, including a Brigadier who has been decorated with the second highest gallantry award, the Kirti Chakra, were turned away by security personnel at IGI Airport on Wednesday when they went to receive the body of Captain D S Jass, who died fighting militants in Sopore the day before.
Top officers of the highly decorated Parachute regiment, who had gone to the airport to honour the martyr, who belonged to the 1st Para regiment, were stopped by CISF personnel and were asked to return.
While the officers had official credentials issued by the Defence Ministry, they did not have passes issued by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security. CISF officials said while other officers with requisite passes were permitted,it would have been impossible to let anyone in without proper authorisation.
Though Vice Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen PC Bharadwaj a decorated Para officer was permitted into the cargo section where the body arrived, what has irked the Army is that other senior officers who had gone to pay their respects were turned back.
Among them was Brigadier S K Razdan,a serving officer bound to the wheelchair due to battle wounds, who is the recipient of Kirti Chakra, the second highest gallantry award of the country after Ashok Chakra. Others, including a serving Maj Gen,were also turned back. The Army has ordered an internal inquiry into the incident.
