The Northeast Delhi Lok Sabha seat was seen as the most interesting race between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s two-term sitting MP Manoj Tiwari and Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar. However, during the results on Tuesday, it became apparent that Kumar would lose by a significant margin, as his vote share could not exceed Tiwari’s even by the slimmest margin.
Tiwari won with 8.2 lakh votes and Kumar received 6.8 lakh votes, trailing by a margin of 1.3 lakh votes as the Lok Sabha election results were announced. “Kanhaiya had very little time to campaign as his candidature was announced at the last moment just 15 days before elections… There was a lot of controversy surrounding his campaign,” said a party insider.
Kumar earlier told The Indian Express he was facing issues seeking rally permissions. Later, he also accused Tiwari of sending his goons to attack him, after he was physically assaulted by two people during one of his campaign visits, the claims were denied by Tiwari’s office.
“Conducting elections in this scorching heat was a tough responsibility… Finally, many congratulations and best wishes to my opposition candidate Manoj Tiwari ji for being elected MP for the third time. I hope that he will live up to the expectations of the people. The people of Northeast Delhi have given the INDIA Group the mandate to play the role of Opposition. We will follow their orders! We will play the role of an active and positive opposition for the people of this area and will continue to raise our voice for their demands and issues,” Kumar said in a post on X after the results were announced.
In the Lok Sabha elections 2014, Tiwari defeated the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s Anand Kumar and Congress’s J P Agarwal by over 1.44 lakh votes. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Manoj Tiwari defeated Congress’s Sheila Dikshit and AAP’s Dilip Pandey by a margin of 3.63 lakh votes
